On June 8, 2005 the ARMY honored the team of inventors from the Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) at Ft. Detrick, MD and Physical Optics Corporation. Wireless Personal Information Carrier (WPIC) also known as Wireless electronic Information Carrier (WEIC) was designated as one of " The Army's Top Ten Greatest Inventions". Major Timothy J. Rapp accepted the glass trophy and a certificate "in recognition of the teams commitment to improving readiness through innovation and developing new technologies that positively impact soldiers".
WPIC technology gives medical personnel instantaneous access to medical data without any physical contact. Extending this technology to the general population can simplify medical examinations and provide instantaneous access to medical data in emergencies and medical record keeping. The technology can also be extended to nonmedical and wireless encrypted data bases such as security check points and identification. POC has developed WPIC using our own proprietary lossless or perceptually lossless data / image / voice and video compression (SCHILL). WPIC features an inactive hybrid power supply, including both passive (RF power transfer), and active (efficient battery operation) systems and fast data transfer. The ultra high effective data communication rate is achieved by modifying Bluetooth technology exceeding 1 Mbps. WPIC will employ FIPS 140-2 certified encryption to assure data security. In addition to the ability to contain an individual's 20 year medical records (read & write) WPIC will also automatically track patients at designated evacuation points, and will include an automated health information system activation/login based on provider proximity.
